The Artistic Highlights from the Year 2024

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

2024 was an interesting year to say the least. It had plenty of ups and downs, like most years. I spent quite a bit of time taking photos of plants, flowers, and insects in my own backyard (literally) and the adjacent Gothe State Park. There were also a number of trips to Cedar Key and Crystal River, both of which are places I will go again. I also hiked around Watermelon Pond a couple of times, and took two day trips to Payne’s Prairie State Park. Lots of photos were taken and a lot were discarded, but there were some keepers, too, so the video shows a few of the highlights from the year. I’d love to hear what you think and any recommendations for trips for 2025.

Many Wonderful Roles that Nature Plays in the Arts-Part II

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

In yesterdays post, we touched on several ways that nature can play an important part in art.  Yesterday we explored how nature activates the emotions of the artist. But time in nature does so much more for artists. Nature can ignite the creative spark within them. The ever-changing seasons, the play of light and shadow, and the patterns found in nature's designs all provide endless possibilities for artistic expression. These things inspire artists to create and to try to utilize what they’ve seen and experienced. Artists can experiment with different techniques and mediums to depict the textures, colors, and movements found in nature, resulting in unique and captivating works of art, and continuing their growth as artists.

Nature also serves as a teacher and a source of knowledge for artists. By observing and studying natural phenomena, artists can gain a deeper understanding of the world and its interconnectedness. They can explore the relationships between living organisms, the balance of ecosystems, and the cyclical nature of life. This knowledge can be reflected in their art, and help to convey important messages about environmental conservation and the need to protect and preserve our natural resources and biodiversity.

In conclusion, the value of nature to the arts cannot be underestimated. It serves as a wellspring of inspiration, a catalyst for creativity, and a source of knowledge and understanding. Through their art, artists can convey the beauty, complexity, and fragility of the natural world, reminding us of the importance of cherishing and protecting our environment.

Many Wonderful Roles that Nature Plays in the Arts-Part I

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

Nature has always played a significant role in inspiring and influencing the arts. This has been going on since the earliest artists were drawing plants and animals on the stone walls of caves. The natural world provides artists with a wealth of inspiration. This can range from large, breathtaking landscapes to the most intricate details of plants, animals, and insects. The value of nature to the arts lies in its ability to evoke emotions, stimulate creativity, and encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world around us. As artists we all strive to discover and learn from all of those things.

When artists immerse themselves in nature, they are often struck by its beauty and grandeur. The vastness of a mountain range, the vibrant colors of a sunset, or the delicate petals of a flower can all elicit a sense of awe and wonder. These experiences and many others can be translated into various art forms, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, music, and the written word. Time spent in nature not only provides artists with wonderfully emotional experiences, but also the inspiration to share those experiences. The works they produce aim to capture the essence and beauty of the natural world that inspired them and to share those emotions and feelings with the viewer.

Tomorrow, in part two of the roles that nature plays in the arts, we will further explore how nature can provide artists with breakthroughs in creativity and a better understanding of the workings of the world we live in.

Nature is a Wonderful Source of Artistic Creativity

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

I have always loved being outside in the beauty of nature.  I grew up in large cities, but our family spent most summers traveling and tent camping, sometimes in some pretty remote places.  I learned at a young age that finding inspiration in nature is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience. Nature has always been a tremendous source of inspiration for many people, including artists, offering an extensive range of colors, shapes, and textures that ignite creativity. Whether it's the captivating hues of a vibrant sunset, the intricate details of a delicate flower, or the awe-inspiring landscape of a majestic forest, nature provides an endless wellspring of inspiration.

Studying the forms and patterns found in nature is a very fruitful avenue for finding inspiration. By closely observing the intricate designs of seashells, the symmetrical patterns of butterfly wings, or the organic shapes of tree branches, artists can discover a plethora of inspiration. Nature's patterns can be beautifully translated into unique and captivating art pieces, whether it be through the strokes of a paint brush, a well composed photograph, the sculpting of clay, a well written poem, or the creation of a mesmerizing textile design.

Colors play a pivotal role in the world of art, and nature offers an abundant palette of hues waiting to be explored. From the vibrant and harmonious colors of a rainbow to the subtle and soothing shades of a sunrise, nature's color spectrum knows no bounds. Drawing inspiration from the colors witnessed in nature and experimenting with different combinations can breathe life into any artwork. Allowing the colors of nature to guide the creative process adds depth, vibrancy, and a touch of natural beauty to any piece of art.

Textures are yet another aspect of nature that can profoundly inspire artists. The rough and weathered bark of a tree, the smooth and polished surface of a river stone, or the delicate and velvety petals of a flower – these textures can be represented in various art forms.   Incorporating different textures into artwork not only adds dimension but also creates a multisensory experience for the viewer, allowing them to connect with the art on a tactile level.

In conclusion, nature is an infinite reservoir of inspiration for artists. By immersing ourselves in its breathtaking beauty, studying its intricate forms and patterns, exploring its vibrant colors, and embracing its diverse textures, we can unlock the full potential of our creativity and create art that is deeply intertwined with the natural world. We all go through periods when we feel a lack of inspiration, so the next time you find yourself in need of a boost in creativity, take a step outside and let nature be your guiding muse. Its wonders are waiting to be discovered and translated into awe-inspiring works of art.

Lessons from the Animal Kingdom: Many Animals are Wonderful Parents

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

In the vast realm of the animal kingdom, a fascinating aspect that continues to capture our attention is the remarkable bond between parents and their offspring. From the tender care of a lioness nurturing her cubs to the intricate teamwork of penguins raising their young, many animals exhibit extraordinary parenting behaviors that can inspire and teach us valuable lessons about love, devotion, and resilience.  You may think that these behaviors are only a trait of birds and mammals, but even many insects provide a food source for their larvae to eat as they grow.

1. Instinctual Nurture:

Animals possess an innate instinct to care for their young, often going to great lengths to ensure their survival. Whether it's a bird building a sturdy nest and protecting it from predators or a mother bear fiercely protecting her cubs, the instinctual nurturing nature of animal parents reminds us of the primal and unconditional love they possess for their young.

2. Teachings of Patience and Perseverance:

Animal parenting teaches us the importance of patience and perseverance. Take the example of an elephant guiding its calf through treacherous terrain or a bird teaching its chicks to fly. These acts of guidance and support reflect the dedication and commitment animal parents have towards their young, inspiring us to be patient and persistent in nurturing the growth of our own loved ones.  We should never forget the beauty of nature and the lessons it has to teach us.

3. Leading by Example:

Animals often lead by example, demonstrating vital life skills to their offspring. Dolphins teach their young to hunt, wolves teach their pups about pack dynamics, and apes teach their infants how to gather food. Animal parents also often show remarkable patience with their offspring and their antics.  By observing these behaviors, we can learn the significance of leading through our actions and providing a strong foundation for the future generations.

Animal parenting is a testament to the innate nurturing and protective instincts that exist across many different species. The lessons we can learn from observing these behaviors are boundless. From unwavering love to the art of imparting valuable life skills, animal parents serve as remarkable role models. Let us embrace the wisdom of the animal kingdom and apply these lessons in our own lives, fostering a sense of care, compassion, and dedication towards the ones we hold dear and the world around us.

Fall is a Great Time of Year for Nature

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

Every season has its pros and cons, but I have to say that spring and fall are my favorites.  They are so full of life out in the natural world.  In the spring it’s new life with plants getting green again, wildflowers blooming, and animals migrating and thinking about mating.  In the fall, there is a new influx of wildflowers, and the animals and insects are busy, busy, busy preparing for winter.  Both spring and fall also bring better weather and temperatures.  This summer was excessively hot, even for Florida, so spending time outside, let alone doing something strenuous like hiking was nearly impossible.  In the middle of summer, even early mornings and late evenings were sweltering.  Now that fall has finally arrived, the temperatures are still warm, but they are no longer oppressive.

Thanks to somewhat cooler weather and new wildflowers it’s time to get back out in the field again.  Like the other animals, I need to prepare for winter by taking photos now, while there’s still plenty to look at. (although decreased leaves on the trees in winter does make bird watching easier).  Fall is also a great time of year for art shows and festivals, so I like to have plenty of new work for those.  Like every season, much of what I’m photographing right now will only be available for a short time (some of our prettiest fall wildflowers have already died back), and then we’ll have to wait another year to see it again.  Fall also brings migrating birds into the area.  Some will stay all winter, but many will stay only a short time before they’re on their way again.

The other wonderful thing about fall, are the fall colors.  Although Florida is not well known for colorful fall foliage, we do get some.  It’s definitely not as brilliant as many other places, but sometimes just a touch of fall color is beautiful, too.  Last year, I spent part of the fall in Alaska and I must say everything about it, including the fall foliage, was incredible.  But when I returned to Florida, we were just starting our fall, and I noticed some similarities in the foliage colors, especially when out in the deep woods.  I spent a fair amount of time out there last year, and I plan to do the same this year.  We may not have the most fall color, but I plan to enjoy what we do get.

So, hopefully you can now understand why I love fall so much.  After being rather cooped up by the summer heat, it’s great to be getting back outside and seeing all the life coming and going.  There is something so enjoyable about getting out in the woods and just watching the birds, insects, flowers, and landscapes.  It definitely give me new inspiration to dive into my art, which I also find wonderfully enjoyable.  Not only is fall a great time of the year for nature, but it’s also a great time of the year for nature photographers and nature inspired artists.

The Crucial Link Between the Environment and Our Future

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

The environment holds the key to our future, shaping the world we will pass on to generations to come. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it affects every aspect of our lives, from the air we breathe to the resources we rely on. By recognizing the significance of the environment, we can pave the way for a sustainable and thriving future.

1. Ecosystem Services: The environment provides invaluable services like clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil. Protecting and preserving these services is crucial for our well-being and the survival of countless species.  These are things we tend to take for granted, but that is definitely a flawed perspective.

2. Climate Change: Our actions today determine the climate of tomorrow. The environment plays a critical role in regulating climate patterns, and addressing climate change is essential to safeguarding our planet and future generations.  We are already seeing alarming weather patterns that are a direct effect of our damage to the environment.  If we do not take huge leaps to protect the environment these patterns and much worse await our children and grandchildren.

3. Biodiversity: The incredible diversity of life on Earth contributes to the resilience and stability of ecosystems. Preserving biodiversity is vital for maintaining ecological balance and supporting essential processes, such as pollination and nutrient cycling.  If we do not preserve these vital processes, all life on Earth, including that of human beings will cease to exist.

4. Sustainable Development: Balancing environmental conservation with economic growth is key to sustainable development. By adopting eco-friendly practices and embracing renewable energy sources, we can build a greener future that meets our needs without compromising the environment.  Each of us needs to contribute to this and do our part in order for it to work.

Although it is often seen as such, the environment is not just a backdrop to our lives; it is the foundation on which our future depends. It is our collective responsibility to protect and preserve it for the well-being of current and future generations. By taking action now, we can create a sustainable world where humans and nature coexist harmoniously, ensuring a brighter future for all.

It’s Been a Year Since Our Alaskan Adventure

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

It’s been almost a year since our trip to Alaska, and it has me reminiscing a bit about the great time we all had.  At the end of September, 2022 I took a couple weeks off and headed to Anchorage, Alaska for my Mom's 80th birthday. My youngest brother, Dan, lives in Anchorage, and he and his girlfriend were gracious enough to host all of us for the celebration.  For Mom’s birthday we had a big pancake breakfast with Mimosas and later in the evening we all took her out for dinner.  We also celebrated Dan’s birthday, which is just three days before Moms.  We stayed for 10 days and we had a lot of fun, some great family time, and saw some incredible scenery and wildlife. Of course, I returned with plenty of photos to go through and edit. It was a very rewarding trip!

The highlight of the trip (besides Mom's birthday) was a boat tour that we took from Seward out to the Aialik Glacier and back. The rocky coast and the blue water were very different from what I'm used to seeing in Florida! Much of the wildlife was also very different from what we see in Florida.  In Alaska, even a large city like Anchorage, the people also seem to have a different attitude about nature, the environment, and wildlife.  They are much more proactive about recycling, keeping the environment clean, and sharing the environment with the wild things.  It’s not uncommon for moose and bears to end up in yards.  Dan’s girlfriend, Deb, has some fantastic photos of a female moose that gave birth to two calves in their backyard.  Instead of freaking out and immediately trying to find someone to “remove it”, people up there tend to live and let live.  We did get to see our own female moose who was grazing on rose hips in a church yard in Seward.  We also found her two calves stashed safely in a field a block away.  We weren’t the only ones who stopped to take photos, but everyone was very respectful of other photographers and the animals.

Besides moose there were also some other spectacular wildlife sightings including bald eagles, Dall's porpoises, orcas, harbor seals, Steller's sea lions, jellyfish, and sea otters.  Dan has a very active bird feeding station on his back deck (all food has to be kept up high so as not to attract bears), so there was some good birding right outside the back window.  I didn’t have the telephoto lens that I have now, and I wish I had since a lot of my bird photos were not as sharp and clean as I had hoped they would be.  I’m sure that lens would have been nice on the boat trip, too.  The disappointment I felt with some of those images is the main reason that I got the new lens.  I don’t know when I’ll get back to Alaska, but I don’t want to miss out on good photo opportunities ever again!

Needless to say, the trip was wonderful and I shared  many of the better photos on my wildlife blog at https://whatnext10.com.  Some of the best of those images are also available as originals or prints on this site as well (see the Works section of this site).  If you see something that you like or have questions about, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] . It was definitely a marvelous trip that I will always remember.  I’m not sure what is the next adventure for me, but I look forward to it!

Environmental factors such as pollution, toxins, and climate change can lead to various health issues, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices.

2. Mental Well-being: Nature has a remarkable ability to improve our mental well-being. Spending time in green spaces, such as parks or forests, has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The beauty of natural landscapes can instill a sense of peace, tranquility, and inspiration.  For many of us, a retreat into nature provides relief from stress, relaxation, and renewed energy.

3. Emotional Connection: Our emotional connection to the environment is profound. Witnessing the wonders of nature, such as vibrant sunsets or majestic mountains, evokes awe, wonder, and a sense of interconnectedness in all of us. Protecting the environment becomes not just an obligation but a deeply personal responsibility.

4. Sustainable Living: Recognizing the impact of our actions on the environment, adopting sustainable practices becomes crucial. Conserving energy, reducing waste, and embracing eco-friendly alternatives can significantly contribute to preserving our planet for future generations.  The path to more eco friendly living lies not with governments, but with each of us as individuals.

The environment is more than just a backdrop to our lives; it is a vital component of our well-being. By understanding and appreciating the impact the environment has on us, we can cultivate a deep sense of responsibility to protect and preserve it. We must prioritize sustainable living and ensure a harmonious relationship with our environment for a healthier and brighter future.

The Grace of Nature: Discovering Nature’s Mercy

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

In our bustling lives, nature's mercy often goes unnoticed. Yet, it surrounds us, offering solace, healing, and forgiveness. Nature's mercy is a powerful force that reminds us of our interconnectedness and the importance of nurturing our relationship with the natural world.  Many people don’t see the mercy of nature, but rather a dog eat dog type of world.  It takes a deeper look and a connection for many to notice it.

Nature extends its merciful touch to those seeking solace. A stroll through a serene forest, the gentle rustling of leaves, waves breaking on the beach, or the soothing sound of a babbling brook can provide much-needed respite from the chaos of daily life. It surrounds us in its calming embrace, allowing our worries to dissipate and our souls to find peace.

Nature teaches us the art of forgiveness and regeneration. After a destructive storm, it rebuilds, rejuvenates, and offers new beginnings. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope and the possibility of renewal. In fact, many habitats require occasional destructive forces to keep them healthy.  Nature's mercy invites us to forgive ourselves and others, allowing room for growth and transformation.

Nature's mercy is a reflection of its profound interconnectedness. It treats all living beings with equanimity, offering sustenance and shelter to every creature. It teaches us the value of compassion, reminding us that we are part of a greater whole. When we embrace nature's mercy, we strengthen our bond with the world around us.

As recipients of nature's mercy, it becomes our responsibility to protect and preserve it. By practicing sustainable living, advocating for conservation efforts, and fostering a deep respect for the natural world, we ensure that future generations can also experience the grace and mercy of nature.

Nature's mercy is an invaluable gift that we often overlook. By acknowledging its presence and embracing its lessons, we can cultivate a harmonious relationship with the natural world. Let us open our hearts to the grace of nature's mercy and work together to safeguard the interconnected web of life that sustains us all.

I Couldn’t Have Found a Better Place to Live

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

Yesterday I was reading a post on Instagram written by a fellow photographer and blogger that I follow. Like me, she loves wildlife and nature (especially birds) and she lives in a lovely area on a mountain in Queensland, Australia. Her post yesterday was about having a flock of eleven galahs that came to her feeding station earlier in the day.  If you aren’t familiar with the galah, it’s a pink and grey cockatoo that is absolutely gorgeous and probably my very favorite bird in the world.  Her photos were great, and I was happy for her to have had such a wonderful experience.  But a little bit of me was also kind of jealous.  I found myself thinking, “why can’t I live in a cool place like that, with awesome and interesting wildlife all around?”.

I think that we have all felt that way once in awhile.  I also think it’s easy to start feeling like whatever is around you is ordinary; especially when you have lived there for many years, like I have.  Later yesterday afternoon I began writing my own post for my own blog, and I realized, this is actually an incredible area to live in.  The post I was working on centered around a little trip I took out to a cattle egret rookery that’s about a fifteen minute drive from my house.  How many people are lucky enough to have something like that so near?  Not many, I’d venture.  That got me thinking about an older post I made about rounding a corner on my small dirt road and finding a white tail doe and her fawn on the edge of the woods by the road.  And I won’t soon forget seeing a swallowtail kite perched in the top of a snag, enjoying the sunrise on a different morning.  I have bobcats, foxes, gopher tortoises, opossums, armadillos,  and raccoons living just behind my home in the Gothe State Forest.  I live on a property with numerous long leaf pines, an endangered species, and I can literally walk to the back of my property and hike trails in a State Forest.  Not many people can say that!  Manatees, river otters, wading birds, and beaches are only an  hours drive away, along with many other state and national parks.  Yes, I am truly blessed to live where I do!

And actually, I am doubly blessed.  I think that I’m extremely fortunate to live here among all this beauty and all these amazing wild creatures, and even if I got nothing else from it, I would be blessed.  But I am also lucky enough to be incredibly inspired by what surrounds me.  It fuels my creative juices, cures my ills, relaxes me, and keeps me sane.  It helps to keep me healthy and fit as I get older and keeps my mind functioning and engaged.  I hope that each and every one of you can feel the same way about where you live.  We all want different things out of life, but if you’re not happy about your surroundings, you can’t be happy about much of anything else.
