Our Sun: The Life Giving Star

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

The sun, our radiant and life-sustaining star, plays a vital role in the existence of life on Earth. Its significance goes far beyond being a celestial body that lights up our skies. It impacts processes on Earth from simple chemical reactions to complex systems like ecosystems.  In this article, we will delve into the various ways in which the sun is of paramount importance to our planet and to all living beings.

First and foremost, the sun is the ultimate source of energy for our planet. Through the process of nuclear fusion, it releases an immense amount of heat and light energy, providing warmth and illumination to Earth. This energy is the foundation of life as we know it, driving photosynthesis in plants and thus sustaining the entire food chain. The sun's rays nourish plants, enabling them to convert carbon dioxide into the oxygen required by most living things on this planet. This also allows plants and produce food  for themselves through photosynthesis. These plants then go on to provide nutrition to many insects, fungi, birds, and grazing animals.  Without the sun's energy, life on Earth would quickly cease to exist.

Moreover, the sun plays a crucial role in regulating our climate and weather patterns. Its rays distribute heat unevenly across the planet, causing variations in temperature and atmospheric pressure. This creates air currents, resulting in wind patterns and influencing global weather systems. The sun's energy also drives the water cycle, evaporating water from the oceans, lakes, rivers, and land surfaces, which then condenses into clouds and falls as precipitation.  This provides  us with vital freshwater resources.

Furthermore, the sun has a profound impact on human and animal health and well-being. Exposure to sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D in our bodies, which is essential for bone health and plays a crucial role in supporting our immune system. Sunlight also helps regulate our circadian rhythm, affecting our sleep patterns and overall mood.

In conclusion, the sun is not just a celestial object in the sky; it is the lifeblood of our planet. From providing energy for photosynthesis to shaping our climate and influencing our health, its importance cannot be overstated. Let us appreciate and cherish the sun's radiance, understanding the profound impact it has on our world and the interconnectedness of all living things under its nurturing glow.

Harnessing the Incredible Power of the Wind

Dee Esler/What Next Photography And Fine Art / Comment on this

The pursuit of renewable energy sources has become increasingly important as we face the challenges of climate change and the need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. One such promising solution is wind energy, a clean and abundant resource that has the potential to transform our energy landscape. In this article, we will explore the benefits of wind energy and its crucial role in creating a sustainable future for our planet.

Wind energy has been used for centuries, from the humble windmills that dotted the countryside to the modern wind turbines that tower over landscapes. The basic principle remains the same: harnessing the power of the wind to generate electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, wind energy is clean and emits no greenhouse gases or pollutants that contribute to air pollution or global warming. This makes it an environmentally friendly alternative and a key player in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

One of the greatest advantages of wind energy is its abundance. The wind is literally everywhere.  Wind is a renewable resource, and its power is virtually limitless. With advancements in technology, wind turbines have become more efficient and capable of generating larger amounts of electricity. Wind farms can be built on land or offshore, tapping into the strong and consistent winds that blow across our planet.

Furthermore, wind energy provides economic benefits; a vital factor in getting people to use it.  The development and operation of wind farms creates job opportunities and stimulates local economies. It also reduces our reliance on imported fossil fuels, making us more energy independent.

While wind energy has its advantages, it is not without challenges. Some concerns include the potential impact on wildlife, visual aesthetics, and noise. However, careful planning, site selection, and ongoing research can help mitigate these issues and ensure responsible development that benefits all species, not just man.

In conclusion, wind energy holds great promise for a sustainable future. By embracing this clean and renewable resource, we can reduce our carbon footprint, combat climate change, and create a more resilient and environmentally conscious world. It is up to us to harness the power of the wind and lead the way towards a greener and brighter future.

Learning to Balance Creativity and Perfectionism Can be Tricky

Dee Esler/What Next Photography And Fine Art / Comment on this

I am what they used to call a type A personality.  I’m a perfectionist and a control freak, and for my career as a veterinary surgeon, it has generally served me well.  But there is a creative side to veterinary medicine too (there are quite a few of us who also work part time as artists).  It’s not entirely unusual to have to get creative when bandaging, splinting, or restraining an animal, since they certainly can get creative in ways to remove said bandages, splints, and restraints.  One of my favorite incidents was a very happy lab mix who injured the end of his tail.  Every time he would wag the tail, which was most of his waking life, he would bang it on something and open it up again.  We tried all sorts of bandages and restraints to no avail, and finally ended up putting him a pair of small panty hose.  They kept the tail from wagging and were easy to get on and off for bathroom breaks and cleaning.  The tail finally healed and everyone was happy.

So what does that have to do with art, you may be asking.  The answer is that some aspects of veterinary medicine like creativity transfer over to the artistic world very well, while some others do not.  I often find my perfectionist side to be a real pain when I’m working on a project.  I don’t want to turn out junk, but I often find myself tweaking things that probably really don’t need to be tweaked.  I have a very difficult time deciding that a piece is done.  I’m often not satisfied, but I’m not even sure why.  I have been known to work on something into the wee hours of the morning and still not feel finished.  It has taken a lot of years, but I have learned that when I get like this the best thing to do is put it up for a day or two and then revisit it with a fresh mind.  I know I’m far from the only creative who gets this way.

The perfectionist and the control freak tend to go hand in hand, but the control freak sometimes causes me problems, too.  In medicine, you have some control (not completely, I’ll admit).  You learn what tends to work and what doesn’t, and you usually get some type of feedback.  In my artistic endeavors that’s not always the case.  What works well in one piece, doesn’t necessarily work well at all in another.  And feedback may be quite delayed, or never come at all.  Feedback is also quite subjective.  A piece I really like, may not do well at all with collectors while one I’m not entirely pleased about may sell the next day.  When I first started doing  artwork, it was entirely for me.  It was a great way to relax and relieve the stresses first of college, and then of everyday life.  Once I began trying to sell, it was no longer entirely for me, and if I didn’t get the results I wanted with a piece, I’d be heartbroken.  Again, I think most of you can relate to those feelings.  It has taken me a long time to find a balance between producing what I like and what I think the public will like (and honestly, I doubt I or any other artist will ever really understand what the public wants because it varies so much from person to person).

Very few people, if any, are completely type A or type B, and although many creatives tend towards the type B, and work more by how they feel, most have a bit of the perfectionist in them, too.  This isn’t entirely a bad thing since anyone who is doing artwork at all seriously wants to produce good works, but we all have to learn to control that side of us to one degree or another.  I think a big part of all of this is getting to know oneself and to know when to continue working and when to reel in the perfectionist and control freak.  That takes time, plenty of practice, and introspection.  Creating is one of the best ways I know of to accomplish that.  So, if you are like me, and tend to doubt yourself, struggle with knowing when to stop, and wish for immediate feedback (who doesn’t), keep creating, keep working, and never let your creative side get completely overwhelmed by the perfectionist.

The Crucial Link Between the Environment and Our Future

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

The environment holds the key to our future, shaping the world we will pass on to generations to come. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it affects every aspect of our lives, from the air we breathe to the resources we rely on. By recognizing the significance of the environment, we can pave the way for a sustainable and thriving future.

1. Ecosystem Services: The environment provides invaluable services like clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil. Protecting and preserving these services is crucial for our well-being and the survival of countless species.  These are things we tend to take for granted, but that is definitely a flawed perspective.

2. Climate Change: Our actions today determine the climate of tomorrow. The environment plays a critical role in regulating climate patterns, and addressing climate change is essential to safeguarding our planet and future generations.  We are already seeing alarming weather patterns that are a direct effect of our damage to the environment.  If we do not take huge leaps to protect the environment these patterns and much worse await our children and grandchildren.

3. Biodiversity: The incredible diversity of life on Earth contributes to the resilience and stability of ecosystems. Preserving biodiversity is vital for maintaining ecological balance and supporting essential processes, such as pollination and nutrient cycling.  If we do not preserve these vital processes, all life on Earth, including that of human beings will cease to exist.

4. Sustainable Development: Balancing environmental conservation with economic growth is key to sustainable development. By adopting eco-friendly practices and embracing renewable energy sources, we can build a greener future that meets our needs without compromising the environment.  Each of us needs to contribute to this and do our part in order for it to work.

Although it is often seen as such, the environment is not just a backdrop to our lives; it is the foundation on which our future depends. It is our collective responsibility to protect and preserve it for the well-being of current and future generations. By taking action now, we can create a sustainable world where humans and nature coexist harmoniously, ensuring a brighter future for all.

It’s Been a Year Since Our Alaskan Adventure

Dee Esler/What Next Photography and Fine Art / Comment on this

It’s been almost a year since our trip to Alaska, and it has me reminiscing a bit about the great time we all had.  At the end of September, 2022 I took a couple weeks off and headed to Anchorage, Alaska for my Mom's 80th birthday. My youngest brother, Dan, lives in Anchorage, and he and his girlfriend were gracious enough to host all of us for the celebration.  For Mom’s birthday we had a big pancake breakfast with Mimosas and later in the evening we all took her out for dinner.  We also celebrated Dan’s birthday, which is just three days before Moms.  We stayed for 10 days and we had a lot of fun, some great family time, and saw some incredible scenery and wildlife. Of course, I returned with plenty of photos to go through and edit. It was a very rewarding trip!

The highlight of the trip (besides Mom's birthday) was a boat tour that we took from Seward out to the Aialik Glacier and back. The rocky coast and the blue water were very different from what I'm used to seeing in Florida! Much of the wildlife was also very different from what we see in Florida.  In Alaska, even a large city like Anchorage, the people also seem to have a different attitude about nature, the environment, and wildlife.  They are much more proactive about recycling, keeping the environment clean, and sharing the environment with the wild things.  It’s not uncommon for moose and bears to end up in yards.  Dan’s girlfriend, Deb, has some fantastic photos of a female moose that gave birth to two calves in their backyard.  Instead of freaking out and immediately trying to find someone to “remove it”, people up there tend to live and let live.  We did get to see our own female moose who was grazing on rose hips in a church yard in Seward.  We also found her two calves stashed safely in a field a block away.  We weren’t the only ones who stopped to take photos, but everyone was very respectful of other photographers and the animals.

Besides moose there were also some other spectacular wildlife sightings including bald eagles, Dall's porpoises, orcas, harbor seals, Steller's sea lions, jellyfish, and sea otters.  Dan has a very active bird feeding station on his back deck (all food has to be kept up high so as not to attract bears), so there was some good birding right outside the back window.  I didn’t have the telephoto lens that I have now, and I wish I had since a lot of my bird photos were not as sharp and clean as I had hoped they would be.  I’m sure that lens would have been nice on the boat trip, too.  The disappointment I felt with some of those images is the main reason that I got the new lens.  I don’t know when I’ll get back to Alaska, but I don’t want to miss out on good photo opportunities ever again!

Needless to say, the trip was wonderful and I shared  many of the better photos on my wildlife blog at https://whatnext10.com.  Some of the best of those images are also available as originals or prints on this site as well (see the Works section of this site).  If you see something that you like or have questions about, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] . It was definitely a marvelous trip that I will always remember.  I’m not sure what is the next adventure for me, but I look forward to it!
